About artist

Ceciel Kroes was born in the early 1960s into a fairly large family, on the outskirts
of a small farming village. The family was talented and creative including lot’s of singing and music-making.

The atmosphere within the family was dynamic. The rural setting hushed.

Much of the artist’s work has to do with reliving the time in which she grew up in the countryside among the trees. She reflects mainly  on the atmosphere and moods of her childhood experiences. After her entrance exam at the art academy, she received a candidacy for 8 years, so she decided to first work in youth care, for which she had already completed a degree program. In 1983, she still went to art school and since then she has been working relentlessly to give visual form to her own inner experience.

At the age of 27, Ceciel moved from the provinces to Amsterdam. In this cosmopolitan city of culture, there was a wider range of poetry, theater, music and art, and thus more opportunity for artistic development. Living in the anonymity of a big city gave a liberating sense of freedom and independence.

However, the outdoor life, and especially tranquil nature, remained a theme in her work reflecting on the dreams, hopes and longings.
